Veterans’ Finals Day

Saturday 29th May saw the Vets Tournament come to a nail-biting end with three of the matches going down to the third set. The singles matches kicked off the day with Ros Chesser defeating defending champion Hilary Austin (7-6, 6-2). In a match lasting nearly three hours, Neil Bradshaw defeated John Howells (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) to take home the trophy. In the ladies’ doubles, Lucy Hamilton and Susie Taylor came through a tight second set to defeat Hilary Austin and Heather Byrne (6-3, 7-6). The men’s doubles was played following the conclusion of the singles, meaning John had to step back on court after his epic singles match. This was another three setter, finishing as the sun set. Duncan Tullis and Bill Austin were victorious: defeating John Howells and Andrew Sanders (6-7, 7-5, 6-3). The final match was the mixed doubles. Not to be outdone by the preceding matches, this one also went to three sets. Andrew Sanders and Lucy Hamilton defeated Bill Austin and Karen Watson (6-2, 4-6, 7-5). Well done to all competitors and a big thank you to the hardcore fans that stayed until the end. Tim Austin
