The competitive season at RPLTC is now well underway with our first finals day of the year taking place on Sunday 10th May.
The day started with defending champion Simon Foster battling against first time vets finalist Gordon Wood: both players fought hard against each other and the elements, with Simon eventually triumphing. Karen Watson took on Magda D’Ingeo in a topsy-turvy match which saw both players winning a set with relative ease, and then Magda clinching a nail-biting champions tie-break to take the trophy!
After a short break, Simon and Gordon returned to the court to do battle again with their respective partners in the doubles: despite some amazing angles from Gordon and strong put-aways from Graham, previous winners Simon and Bill emerged victorious.
In a repeat of last year’s final (and the year before!), the ladies’ doubles was a close match again: Lucy and Susie took the first set to storm to an early lead, but Kerry & Catherine fought back to take the second set and champions tie-break.
The last match of the day saw last year’s runners up Graham and Magda taking on new pairing Simon and Kerry: this was a good quality match despite four sets of tired legs, and Simon and Kerry took the win.
A big thank you to everyone who helped to make the day a success: Hilary on tea duty, Emily running the bar; Duncan, Mars, Peter, Frank and Spencer for umpiring; and all of the spectators who braved the wind and rain to come and cheer on our finalists! And to our Club Captain, Claire, for organising another fantastic tournament for us all to enjoy.
The next finals day will be on Sunday 12th July: we’ll be starting the finals a little earlier than usual to enable everyone to enjoy the last day of Wimbledon on the club TV.
