Saturday 11 September saw a fantastic display of tennis at the Handicap Finals Day. As ever the event attracted a large group of spectators who were entertained with some close and well-fought matches.
It was great to see a mix of members in the finals, some seasoned finalists but also some people in their first final, or even the first time they have entered!
The results: Huge congratulations to our 2021 Handicap tournament champions:
Men’s Singles: Ben Lacey (-30) bt Josh Nichols (-15) 10-8.
Ladies Singles: Magda D’Ingeo (0/-15) bt Barbara Peters (0) 10-5
Men’s Doubles: Marcus Dale and Marius van Zyl (-15) bt David Leech and Roger Beer (-40) 10-5
Ladies Doubles: Kerry Johnson and Karen Watson (-40) bt Claire Wiley and Katie Bell (-40) 10-3
Mixed Doubles: Kati Beer-Riley and Bill Austin (-30/40) bt Kerry Johnson and Tim Austin (-60) 10-6.
Our club president, Lyn presented all the trophies after the final match and then Hugh presented a couple of other special trophies.
The first trophy was for Most Improved Player. There were a number of people nominated for this award this year – Magda D’Ingeo, Ed Daubeney, Kelly Price, Britt Dobie & Mark Waine all received a special mention.
But the winner of the trophy was Euan Waite. Euan is our U18 boys champion and he has made huge strides this year in his tennis and is now a regular attendee of Men’s Match Practice and is amongst our best players. Well deserved and congratulations Euan!
The second trophy was a personal one from Hugh Brown in his final year as Chairman of the club. It was in recognition of the members of our club that go above and beyond to make the club the wonderful place that it is. Special mentions went out to Paul Furr for the fantastic work he has done on the designs for the new clubhouse and to Catherine Hartshorn for the tireless work that she puts in week in and week out on maintaining our grounds and clubhouse. Huge thank you to both of these superstars.
But the winner was Claire Wiley for all the things she has done this year in making our social sessions such a success. Well done Claire and thanks for such a great job!
The end of season barbecue followed the awards and was such a fun way to end the season!
Many, many people are involved in making a finals’ day successful. Thanks must go :
– To Clive for manning the bar all day and night, to Clive and Russell for organising and running the BBQ
– To everyone who helped move umpires’ chairs, scoreboards, benches, tables, chairs and tidy up afterwards
– To the wonderful umpires on the day, Ann W, Hilary, Tim, Hugh and Russell
– To Tim for organising the whole event and sorting out all the trophies and to Lyn for presenting the trophies on the day
– And to everyone who came to cheer on the competitors
Yet another finals day to remember!
