Our Open Finals were held on Saturday and what a day it was. The standard of tennis was exceptionally high in every match and they were all closely fought in great spirits.
We are known in the area as a very friendly club with a great family feel. The smiles, laughs and banter during the matches, the friends and families watching and the hugs and handshakes at the end of every match really did demonstrate why we have this reputation, we’re a lovely bunch!
The finals were made up of both experienced finalists and some playing in their first Finals day. Congratulations to all our 2023 winners and runners up: Yoav, Euan, Bill, Ed, Dave, Claire, Magda, Kerry, Catherine, Lucy and Susie.
The results:
Claire Wiley won her 7th Open Singles title - what an achievement!
Lucy Hamilton and Susie Taylor won their 7th doubles title, which, again, is a phenomenal success.
The Men’s and mixed matches saw a new triple Champion in Yoav Achiam, who won the singles, doubles with Euan Waite and mixed doubles with Kerry Johnson! We haven’t seen a men's triple champion since Bill did the triple in 1993! Quite a day for Yoav!
We must also congratulate Euan Waite who, despite being still a junior, played his way into two finals, and walked away with the men’s doubles trophy (in addition to his U18 title a week ago). A very talented member of our club.
The scores:
Men’s Singles: Yoav Achiam bt Euan Waite 6-2 6-4
Ladies Singles: Claire Wiley bt Magda D’Ingeo 6-2 6-3
Men’s Doubles: Yoav Achiam and Euan Waite bt Bill Austin and Ed Daubeney 6-3 6-2
Ladies Doubles: Lucy Hamilton and Susie Taylor bt Kerry Johnson and Catherine Hartshorn 6-4 6-3
Mixed Doubles: Yoav Achiam and Kerry Johnson bt David Leech and Claire Wiley in possibly the closest mixed doubles in our club's history 6-4 4-6 7-6
As ever we must thank all the people that made the tournament and the finals day run smoothly. It takes a lot of effort over a number of weeks.
Thanks so much to:
- To everyone that entered the tournament. It’s not about one finals day, it’s about each and every match that gets played. There were some very close matches in every round and we hope everyone enjoyed the part that they played in the overall event
- Clive for manning the bar all day once again
- Graham, Peter H, Marcus, Hilary and Tim for splendidly umpiring the matches
- Graham and Jacqui for organizing and running the BBQ after the matches
- To everyone who helped set up umpires chairs, score boards, set up, clear away and tidy up at the end of the day
- To the spectators who came to watch and create the atmosphere that makes the day such fun
- To the competitors for playing the matches in great spirits and making such an entertaining afternoon
- And lastly to Tim for once again organizing the whole event, creating the new online sign up system, sorting out the draws, managing the constant requests for extensions to play by dates (!!), entering all the results online, ordering all the trophies and organizing the day.
