2025 Handicap Finalists

Sunday 13th July was our second finals day of the year, and we had several new finalists joining us for an exciting handicap finals day.  This was also the first time we’ve held a finals day on the same day as the Wimbledon men’s final, and starting a little earlier meant there was time for both watching and playing tennis!

First up were our two singles finals:  in the ladies we had Mars Hatari and Magda D’Ingeo battling it out for the trophy; in the men’s it was first time finalists Carter Johnson and Jonny Engel.  A closely fought ladies match ended with Magda taking the trophy with a 10-7 victory over Mars, and an even closer men’s final with many long rallies and tight games ended with a 12-10 triumph for Jonny.

The ladies and men’s doubles finals were up next, with new pairing Catherine Hartshorn and Alexa Johnson taking on Elaine Hargreaves and Magda D’Ingeo in the ladies, and veteran pairing John Rankin and Spencer Tavares taking on first time finalists Carter Johnson and Joe Jefferies.  Both matches were exciting to watch, with Catherine and Alexa fighting back from 5-1 down to take a 10-7 victory, and Carter and Joe chasing down every ball to win 10-2.

The mixed doubles final featured the return of Carter, Alexa and John, this time with John joined by Vicky Hildreth to take on the brother/sister duo.  After some hard hitting and dynamic net play from all four players, Carter and Alexa emerged victorious, leaving just enough time for the presentations before the start of the Wimbledon men’s singles final.

Big thanks to our volunteer umpires Duncan Tullis, Russell Dykes, Hilary Austin, Hywel Hughes and Peter Hargreave, as well as everyone involved with teas, the bar, the bbq, and the Active Away prize draw!
